Tow Bar Hitch Extensions Australia — What You Need to Know

When you need one, what size, and how to use it safely.

What is a hitch extension?

A steel bar that slides into your towbar receiver and extends the tow point rearwards. Used to clear a 4WD's spare wheel, a swung-out rear door, or to push a bike carrier further back.

Sizes: 2-inch vs 50mm

50mm is the Australian standard. 2-inch (50.8mm) is found on some US imports. Common extension lengths are 200mm, 300mm and 400mm. Anything over 400mm requires special engineering certification.

Weight ratings

Adding length reduces towing capacity. A 300mm extension typically halves rated capacity. Always check the extension's stamped rating against your trailer's loaded weight.

Legal use in Australia

Legal provided you don't exceed the extension's rated capacity, the extension is properly secured with a pin and clip, and the trailer's number plate and lights remain visible.
